Description

The Primary School in Whitekirk, built in 1877, is a single-storey T-plan gabled structure. It features squared and snecked stugged red sandstone with cream stugged ashlar dressings, while the rear is constructed of rubble. The building has crowstepped gables and beak skewputts.

On the west elevation, there is a gabled porch set in the re-entrant angle, which is attached to the east-west gabled wing. Above the 4-centred doorway, which has a hoodmould and a vertically paned fanlight, is a dated shield. The door is boarded. The windows also have hoodmoulds, with a tripartite window on the outer right that includes a moulded blank square panel above the centre, a small gable head window, and the corbelled base of a former bellcote. To the left, the recessed bays of the north-south wing contain two bipartite windows.

The east (rear) elevation features a gable to the left of the east-west wing, which has a tripartite window and a small light above, but lacks hoodmoulds. The south elevation has a raised gabled panel that breaks the eaves at the centre, featuring a tripartite window with a taller centre light, which steps down below in a corbelled fashion and incorporates a round-arched niche. Single lights flank the outer bays, and all openings have hoodmoulds.

The north gable contains a bipartite window without a hoodmould, and there is a lean-to harled boiler room adjoining to the right. The sash and case windows have small-pane glazing, and the building has a coped ridge stack and a north gable end stack with its original can. The roofs are covered with slate.

A rubble retaining wall supports the higher ground on the school side to the south, east, and west.
