Description
The former Renton School, built in 1840 and rebuilt and enlarged in 1887, is a single-story, near T-plan building. It is constructed of whinstone rubble with cream and pink sandstone dressings. A moulded eaves course runs around the building, accentuated by stugged quoins and long and short surrounds to the openings, which are predominantly chamfered. The windows feature sandstone mullions and transoms, with flush cills.
The northeast (front) elevation has a projecting gable end to the left, crowned with a stepped tripartite window at ground level (featuring a 2-pane upper light centred and a continuous stepped hoodmould). A louvred attic opening is centred in the finialled gablehead. To the right is a recessed three-bay range, with a gabled dormerhead breaking the eaves above a bipartite window (containing 2-pane upper lights) at the centre, with single windows flanking at ground level.
The southeast (side/entrance) elevation displays a two-bay block to the right, featuring a decorative wallhead stack at the centre. A plaque on this stack reads "Erected by Public Subscription 1840, Rebuilt 1887," and is flanked by tripartite windows at ground level. A lower, two-bay block adjoins to the left, with a boarded timber door to the right and a 2-pane fanlight above. A corbel-bracketed, crowstepped gable breaks the eaves above, with a central panel inscribed "Boys," and a single window at ground level to the left. A boarded timber door is set within a lean-to addition recessed to the outer left.
The southwest (rear) elevation features a projecting gable end to the right and a lean-to addition at ground level. A recessed two-bay wing is to the left, with single windows in both bays, flanked by a central wallhead stack. A piended entrance is situated in the re-entrant angle to the right.
The northwest (side) elevation has a projecting gable end offset to the left of centre, with a bipartite window (containing 2-pane upper lights) at ground level and a louvred attic opening in the finialled gablehead. A recessed two-bay range is to the right, with steps leading to a projecting entrance on the left, featuring a timber panelled door and a 2-pane fanlight. A single window is to the right. Steps lead to a boarded timber door in a lean-to addition recessed to the outer right. A single window is in the bay recessed to the outer left.
The windows are predominantly fitted with 6-pane timber glazing, with upper hoppers. The roof is covered in grey slate, with stone-coped skews and bracketed skewputts. A decorative sandstone wallhead stack is on the southeast elevation, and a brick-built wallhead stack is on the southwest elevation, both topped with circular cans.
Inside the principal block, the floor is of boarded timber with a boarded timber dado. There are timber panelled doors, and a combed ceiling.
The boundary walls are heavily-pointed rubble walls with arched coping, enclosing the site.
