Description

The Lochwinnoch Community Library, located at 51 and 53 High Street, is a single-storey building originally constructed in 1857, with a later extension added to the rear. This former school features eight bays and has a recessed gabled entrance bay on the far left, while the right side has an advanced three-bay gable. The building is made of coursed, squared rubble with raised margins and has a late 20th-century single-storey rendered extension in the re-entrant angle to the north.

The principal elevation faces southeast and includes an off-center three-bay projecting gable to the right, which has a timber door at the re-entrance angle to the southwest and an apex stack. A central commemorative stone plaque is set in the gable. The recessed gabled entrance bay on the far left has a broken-bed pediment, a central window opening, and a non-traditional entrance door on the far right. The left side features a curved, half-height corner with moulded and corbelled detailing above.

The windows are predominantly timber sash and case, with configurations of four-over-six panes and two-over-three panes. The roof is covered with grey slates, and there are stepped stone skews and consoled skew putts. A tall, corniced wallhead stack is located to the southwest, with a ridge stack to the east.

Inside, as seen in 2010, the space is mostly open plan, with some simple cornicing in the entrance hall.

The boundary wall to the northeast is made of rubble and features saddle-back coping along with a square-plan pier topped with a pyramidal cap.
