Description
Reddingmuirhead Community Centre is a single-storey, five-bay building that was originally constructed as a school in 1856, with later additions and alterations. It is built from tooled squared and snecked sandstone, polished at the margins, featuring chamfered reveals, strip quoins, and overhanging eaves.
The southeast elevation is asymmetrical, with regular windows in the central three bays. To the left, there is an advanced gabled bay with a bipartite window and a louvred opening in the gablehead. To the right, a gabled porch is set at a re-entrant angle, featuring a window in the centre and a boarded timber door on the right return. An additional gabled porch is advanced to the outer right bay, which has a window in the centre, a blind plaque above, and a birdcage bellcote with a surviving bell and obelisk finial, along with a boarded timber door on the right return.
The northeast elevation features a gabled kitchen wing that is cement-faced and advanced at the ground floor, with an opening set in the gablehead. The northwest elevation is asymmetrical and consists of five bays, with regular fenestration in four bays to the left and a stepped-forward gabled bay to the right, which has a window in the centre and a louvred opening in the gablehead. The southwest elevation has four bays with regular fenestration.
The building has replacement PVCu windows and a slate roof with a tiled ridge. The gableheads and ridge stacks are coped, with circular cans, and it features cast-iron rainwater goods.
Inside, the community centre has a simple interior with boarded timber below the cill level. Most rooms have cast-iron fire surrounds with neo-classical detailing.
The property is enclosed by sandstone random rubble walls with stepped coping, which sweep around to two oversized circular gatepiers that have waisted necks, cornicing, and curved caps. The entrance features simple iron gates that are two-leaf.
