Description

The building is a school located in Spott, originally established in 1832 by John Mason Junior. It was altered to become a schoolhouse around 1872, when a new school was added to the east, and it currently functions as a community centre. The structure is made of squared and snecked red rubble sandstone, featuring stugged ashlar dressings and a base course.

The schoolhouse is a single-storey building with an attic and basement. The southeast elevation is symmetrical with three bays. It has a central gabled bay with a corbelled, open pediment above the door, which features a small pane fanlight. There is a stone mullioned bipartite window in the gable head, with a school bell positioned above it, and large windows flanking the entrance at ground level. At the rear, there is a modern lean-to extension. The sash and case windows have a plate glass glazing pattern, and the roof is covered with green slates, featuring timber bracketed, overhanging eaves and gable end stacks.

The community centre includes a rear block that is adjoined to the east gable of the schoolhouse. This block has two windows facing north and a stone mullioned bipartite window in the east gable. To the south, there is a larger gabled school room block. A projecting porch is set in the re-entrant angle formed between the schoolhouse and the school room, featuring a shouldered lintel above the door and a moulded blocking course. The door is boarded and has decorative hinges. Additionally, there is another gabled porch attached to the east end of the school room block, which has two windows to the south. The gable ends to the east and west feature tall bipartite windows with small windows in the gable heads.

The south windows have a multi-pane glazing pattern, while the remaining windows have small panes in sash and case style. The roof of the community centre also has green slates and overhanging timber bracketed eaves, with a stack set in the valley. A decorative timber bellcote with a spirelet and weathervane is present, along with a finial retained in the east gable.
