Lowood, Spott

Canongate in Spott is a mid-19th century single storey and attic cottage, which is attached to an earlier 19th century single storey cottage. Both cottages have three bays and are positioned right at the roadside. They are constructed from red rubble sandstone with ashlar dressings.

The earlier cottage features a timber columned, gabled porch at the center, topped with a finial and flanked by windows. It has a steeply pitched roof. The later cottage has an open, pedimented canopy above the central door, with windows on either side at ground level and gabled dormer windows in the attic that break the eaves. The casement windows have a diamond-pane glazing pattern. The roof is covered with grey slates, and the higher cottage has coped gable end stacks with moulded corbelling at the gablehead, along with gablet skews that feature consoled skewputts and stone finials.

Rubble garden walls are attached to the northern and western angles of the property, adjacent to the road.
