Description

The Old Schoolhouse, located at 6 Dunfermilne Road in Limekilns, is an early 20th-century, two-storey, three-bay square-plan school building. It features moulded ashlar surrounds around its openings and a base course, constructed from stugged snecked sandstone.

The southeast elevation is asymmetrical, showcasing a central panelled door with a fanlight above. To the right, there is a corniced eaves course and a mullioned bipartite window. Above this, a piended bipartite dormer window is located in the gable, along with a small rooflight at the centre. The left side of the elevation has a gabled bay with a corniced canted bay window that contains three windows, and a centrally placed mullioned bipartite window above it.

The northeast elevation is partially visible and features a door and a ground floor window to the right, with two windows centred above. A modern extension is present to the right. The northwest elevation was not seen in 2000. The southwest elevation includes a modern conservatory addition and a first-floor window to the left.

The building has timber sash and case windows, with four upper panes and one lower pane, and moulded cills. The roof is a gambrel slate design, swept at the eaves, with raised stone skews and corniced skewputts. The principal elevation's left bay has corbelled gable ends, and there are corniced gable apex stacks with circular cans. Decorative cast-iron rainwater goods with hoppers are also present.

The interior was not seen in 2000. A low sandstone boundary wall with a central gate is located at the front of the property.
