Description
Wellhead House is a 3-bay, 2-storey and attic house built in 1792. It is situated on Sandilands Lane, Limekilns, and is accompanied by a single-storey cottage called The Neuk.
The house is constructed of coursed, tooled sandstone rubble, with snecked areas, and has ashlar dressings around the openings, at the eaves, on the quoins, and along the gable wallheads. The principal, southwest-facing elevation features a central replacement 2-leaf glazed door, flanked by windows on either side. There are three windows on the first floor, centered above, with a replacement window in the center, which formerly was a Venetian window – its central arch remains. Two small piended attic dormer windows are integrated into the roof. The northwest elevation is a plain gable. The northeast elevation includes an extension called The Neuk; Wellhead House extends for one room under The Neuk, and has later lean-to outshots to the right. The southeast-facing elevation reveals a ground floor window to the right, under The Neuk, a replacement ground and first floor window to the right in the gable, and a first-floor Venetian window to the left. A 1792 datestone is positioned in the apex, flanked by projecting cross-inscribed bullstones.
Inside, the house contains a sitting room to the right and a kitchen to the left, connected by a central passageway. A staircase is positioned to the rear left, and a door opposite the front door leads to store rooms. There are lean-to outshots to the front and left, and a room to the far right under The Neuk, with remnants of a possible range. Originally an external window was placed at the bottom of the stairs, and now it is internal. A winding staircase ascends to the first floor, where bedrooms and a bathroom are located. Some cornicing and dado railing remain. Stairs lead to two attic rooms, which have coved roofs following the roofline. The interior features lath and plaster walls, some panelled doors, and remnants of bed recesses. The fireplaces and range in the sitting room have been removed. Large, near-square window openings are preserved on the principal elevation. Original windows present at the first floor right on the principal elevation, and the Venetian window on the southeast gable, feature internal spiral handles and 20-pane glazing, with a central 12-pane section flanked by four panes. These are timber sash and case windows with horns. The roof is pitched with slate, and includes scroll skewputts; there are corniced gable apex stacks.
The Neuk is a stone cottage built into the bank, attached to the rear of Wellhead House. It has sandstone rubble construction on the south side and is harled elsewhere, with dressings to some windows and quoins. Its southeast elevation contains two windows, the southwest is adjoined to Wellheads House, the northwest has replacement fenestration and a modern flat-roofed porch, and the northeast elevation has a window to the right. The cottage has a pitched slate roof, a ridge and gable apex stack, and scroll skewputts to the northeast gable.
A garden wall continues from Wellhead House along Dunfermline Road to The Neuk, enclosing a courtyard with an outhouse to the north. The garden wall, a low rubble structure with a central opening in front of the principal elevation, extends from the left gable to Sandilands, creating a linear garden. This wall continues northeastwards towards The Neuk, enclosing a yard.
