Description
The Elms is an early 19th-century, two-storey house with a basement and attic, featuring a three-bay rectangular plan and a later porch addition that creates a T-plan layout. The exterior is rendered with painted margins.
On the southeast elevation, there is an advanced central section with a glazed door and a window to the left, both sheltered by a slate canopy roof. A first-floor window is also located to the left, and there is a ground floor window in the left return. Stone steps with a curved detail lead up to the door. The section to the right is set back and has a single window on both the ground and first floors, along with a flat-roofed attic dormer window. The section to the left is also set back, featuring a basement window and a single window on both the ground and first floors, with another flat-roofed attic dormer window.
The southwest elevation includes a glazed door and a window to the basement, as well as a first-floor window to the right. The northwest elevation has a basement porthole window to the right, a small ground floor window to the left, and a central first-floor window. There is a central flat-roofed dormer window with flanking rooflights, and two cross-inscribed projecting bullstanes at the first floor. The northeast elevation features a replacement door to the right.
The house predominantly has 12-pane timber sash and case windows, a pitched slate roof with raised smooth skews, two gable apex stacks with circular cans, and cast-iron rainwater goods.
Inside, there is a cornice and pilasters at the original front door, which is now located within the porch, and a circular stained glass in the letterbox fanlight. A central spiral stone staircase adds to the interior's character.
Surrounding the garden is a rubble boundary wall on the southeast, southwest, and northeast sides, featuring curved coping stones. The southeast wall is swept at the corners, while the outer northeast wall is pebbledashed and includes a door and a stone inscribed 'THE ELMS', along with a droved stone base.
Attached to the southwest gable is a single-storey row of three sheds with a whitewashed exterior, replacement doors, and fixed windows. These outbuildings house a toilet, coal shed, and wash-house, and include a brick chimney with a circular can.
In the garden, there is a metal hand pump that remains from a well, although it is no longer operational.
