Description

The Gables is an early 19th-century, three-storey, three-bay house located on Brucehaven Road in Limekilns. The house features sandstone rubble on the east and south elevations, with coursed, cut blocks on the north gable and snecked stone on the west elevation. It has raised ashlar surrounds around its openings, an eaves course, and decorative elements across the gable wallheads and quoins. A later addition from the 19th century includes a two-storey porch on the west elevation, which is pedimented and constructed of stugged ashlar.

On the west (principal) elevation, there is a central stair window leading to the porch, which has a corniced pediment adorned with apex and corner finials. The left side of the porch features a corniced and pilastered doorpiece that frames a panelled front door. To the right of the porch is another door, with single windows on the ground and first floors in the outer bays, and three windows on the second floor.

The north elevation has two ground floor windows and a single window to the right on the first and second floors. The east elevation is marked by three regularly placed windows on each floor, with a central ground floor window that was formerly a door, blind first floor windows in the outer bays, and a blind second floor window to the right. The south elevation has a second floor window to the left and is attached to a single-storey structure known as Forth Cottage.

The interior was not seen in 1999. The house features regularly spaced, two-pane timber sash and case windows with horns, a pitched roof covered in concrete tiles, and corniced chimney stacks at the gable apex.

Additionally, there is a rubble garden wall that runs from the north gable on Sandilands and extends along Brucehaven Road to enclose the garden.
