Description

The Exciseman's House at Littlemill Whiskey Distillery, located on Dumbarton Road in Bowling, dates from the later 18th century and features mid 19th century additions. This two-storey, nearly symmetrical four-bay house includes a later single bay on the outer left. It is constructed of random sandstone rubble with traces of white limewash, and the later addition is made of coursed sandstone rubble with white-painted dressings. The building has angle margins and an eaves course, along with margined windows.

On the south entrance elevation, there is a gabled timber porch. To the right of the porch is a window, and to the outer right is a tripartite window. To the left of the porch, there is a larger bipartite window. The first floor features four windows, with the one on the outer left having a gabled dormerhead that breaks the eaves.

The west side elevation includes a single-storey addition, which has part sandstone at the front and brick at the rear, topped with a slate roof. On the east elevation, there is a window on the outer left at the first floor.

The north rear elevation has a blocked door in the center, with a window above it at the first floor. There is a later two-storey projection to the right that includes a door and two windows, with a gabled dormerhead window above. Most windows are blocked with chipboard, except for an eight-pane sash and case window on the east elevation. The roof is grey slate, featuring two corniced stacks at the ridge and a tall wallhead stack on the west elevation, both with moulded cans.

Inside, there is a tiled hall and some fielded panels on the shutters at the ground floor. The boundary wall surrounding the property is made of rubble with red sandstone coping, although part of it has unfortunately been redone in cement.
