Description
Fragmentary castle standing on an irregular rocky cliff by the River Clyde. The ruinous walls to the south and west of the castle enclosure may be late 14th century (Buildings of Scotland). A dwelling house has been erected at the northwest corner of the enclosure, partly 16th century, mostly late 19th century. The northwest turret of the house has chequered corbelling. The round tower in opposite corner of the enclosure (NS 43764 73464) is probably 16th or 17th century and appears to have been a pigeon house.
Dunglass passed into the hands of the Colquhoun family towards the end of the 16th century, building the dwelling house within the fortified walled enclosure. The house was remodelled by 1832 with a square two-storey bay added in the west wall, with further enlargement 1852-61 and alteration by Talwin Morris in 1893.
