Description
The Gospel Hall, located at 140 Morningside Road in Morningside, Edinburgh, dates back to 1823. It is a small, single-storey, three-bay rectangular-plan schoolhouse that features later side wings added in 1980. The building is constructed from cream sandstone, with droved ashlar on the front and sides, and a rubble rear that includes droved quoins. It has a base course and an eaves band.
On the front elevation, the central bay is advanced and features a single window that breaks the eaves, set within a square ashlar panel that bears a clock and connects to a half-pitched roof. The outer bays have entrance doors beneath deep cornices with stylised brackets; these modern doors are complemented by rectangular fanlights, with the left door having a fanlight of four oval panes and the right door having four rectangular panes. There are modern, flat-roofed side wings on both the right and left.
The north and south elevations contain single windows, some of which are blocked and obscured by extensions. The windows are timber sash and case with plate glass glazing. The roof is covered with slate and features a piend design, lead flashings, and a small louvred conical iron chimney at the rear, along with a rooflight on the north side.
Inside, there is a single room with a plain plastered cove ceiling. The property is enclosed by a stepped rubble boundary wall topped with semi-circular coping, along with a plain cast-iron gate and railings.
