Description
The Hatherleigh War Memorial is a tall granite structure located in the churchyard, south of the Church of St John the Baptist, which is a Grade I listed building. It is also near several other Grade II listed buildings and churchyard monuments. The memorial features a wheel-head cross that stands on a large square plinth, which is elevated on a three-stepped base resting on a substantial concrete foundation.
The main dedicatory inscription on the front face of the plinth states: "TO THE HONOURED MEMORY OF THE BRAVE MEN OF THIS PARISH WHO LAID DOWN THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1918 GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS THAT A MAN LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS." The names of those commemorated from the First World War are listed on either side of the plinth.
Additionally, there is a later dedication for the Second World War inscribed on the front face of the upper step of the base, which reads: "TO THE MEMORY OF THOSE WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE WORLD WAR 1939 – 1945," with seven names recorded below on the middle step.
