Description
The Matfen War Memorial is located at the east end of the village green in an enclosed area, near several Grade II-listed buildings, including a 19th-century drinking fountain and the Church of the Holy Trinity. The memorial features a tall Celtic cross with interlace patterns carved in relief on the front face of the wheel-head, which also has a central hemispherical boss. The cross shaft tapers and rises from a small rectangular pedestal that sits on a three-stepped base.
The main dedicatory inscription on the front face of the pedestal states: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN GRATEFUL REMEMBRANCE OF THE MEN OF THIS PARISH WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR KING AND COUNTRY IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1918" followed by four names. Additional names are inscribed on the two side faces of the pedestal.
At the rear, the dedication for the Second World War reads: "GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS THAT A MAN LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS. 1939 – 1945" followed by three names.
