Description
The gates, gatepiers, and screen walls located to the west of Matfen Hall date from the early 18th century and early 19th century. They are constructed from ashlar and iron.
The 18th-century square gatepiers feature shell niches, pulvinated oak-leaf friezes, and moulded cornices, topped with urn finials that rest on large scrolled bracket bases. The urns are decorated with faces and swags.
Flanking the entrance are low quadrant walls that have cornices and end in 19th-century square corniced piers with pyramidal caps. The 19th-century gates have a ramped-down top rail, simple pointed railings, and half railings.
