Description
39 Market Street is a house dating from the 17th century, with early 19th-century alterations. It features plastered walls that are joint-lined and has a gable-ended slate roof. There is a brick stack located axially between the front range and the left-hand rear wing. The layout consists of two rooms with a central passage in the front range, both rooms heated by rear lateral fireplaces. There are two rear wings, with the left-hand one being longer, both likely added in the late 17th century. The house was re-fronted in the early 19th century and restored in the late 20th century.
The exterior is two storeys high with a symmetrical three-window front. The right-hand window on the first floor is an early 19th-century 16-pane sash, while the two windows to its left are later 20th-century replicas. On the ground floor, there are rectangular bay windows on either side of small-paned sashes; the right-hand bay window is from the 20th century, and the left-hand one may be early 19th century. The entrance features a pedimented plastered doorcase with a six-panelled door. At the rear, the longer wing on the right has a 17th-century three-light chamfered wooden mullion window on its inner face, along with two additional windows of three and four lights on its gable end.
Inside, the left-hand room contains a fireplace with a chamfered and ogee-stopped wooden lintel. One late 17th-century or 18th-century truss remains, consisting of straight principals with a collar halved onto them and trenched purlins.
