Description
House. Dating from the 17th century, it was altered in the early 19th century. The house is timber-framed, with plastered walls, slate and handmade red clay tiled roofs, and stacks of red brick and gault brick. It has four bays facing northeast, with a red brick stack positioned one bay from the left end against the front wall. It was extended to the left by one bay in the 18th or 19th century. A gault brick stack is located at the right end. A rear wing of two bays extends from the rear of the main block, featuring a gault brick end stack. A 17th-century extension of three bays is located in the right rear angle, running parallel to the main range, with a small 19th-century lean-to extension at the right end. The front facade has a 3-window range of early 19th-century sash windows with 16 lights, using crown glass. A 6-panel door has lower panels that are boarded. The front elevation was raised approximately one metre in the early 19th century and is plastered with incised lines imitating ashlar. This part displays a shallow-pitched slate roof, while the rear retains a steeply pitched tiled roof. The remaining roofs are tiled. The interior features chamfered spine beams with run-out stops, plain vertically sectioned joists (originally plastered to the soffits, some now exposed), and jowled posts. A large wood-burning hearth faces the left side, with some renewed brickwork. The rear hearth was rebuilt in the 20th century. The early 19th-century staircase has wreathed rosewood rails, stick balusters, two cast iron stanchions with guilloche and other motifs, and scrolled tread ends. In the rear wing is an early 19th-century pine corner cupboard with profiled shelves.
