Description
House. Dating from the 17th century, it was altered in the 18th, early 19th, and 20th centuries. The house is timber-framed and originally clad with gault brick in Flemish bond, with painted brick and plaster sections, and a roof of handmade red clay tiles. The main south-facing range has six bays and two axial chimney stacks, plus one at the rear front right corner. A single-storey extension to the left was added in 1938. A shorter, parallel range is set to the rear, dating from the 18th century, with a red brick external stack near the left end, and single-storey lean-to extensions nearby. A 20th-century rear wing is located at the right end, with one internal chimney stack, and a lean-to conservatory to the right. The main range has a six-window front with 20th-century sash windows in early 19th-century openings. The central door has six panels to each side, panelled jambs, a soffit, a moulded flat canopy, and an early 19th-century hinged roller blind. The roof is hipped. Inside the main range, one transverse beam is visible and chamfered without stops; two others are concealed. The timber frame, originally close-studded, is largely hidden by panelling and plaster. The roof is constructed with joggled butt-purlins and vertically set rafters, incorporating numerous reused rafters from a medieval crownpost roof, some displaying smoke-blackening.
