Description
The Old School House is an elementary school built in 1846, now converted into a house. It features pebble rubble construction with gault brick and limestone dressings, topped with decorative five-sided slates. The main range faces east, with a forward-projecting entrance block that creates an irregular T-plan. There is an original internal stack at the rear, opposite the entrance block, and a 20th-century stack to its right. A 20th-century rear wing of yellow brick, covered with plain slates, has been added. The building is one storey high and has two 20th-century casement windows in the original openings. The entrance features 20th-century double doors with a two-centred head set in an original moulded stone surround, with shafted jambs that have capitals and bases in brick dressings. Each side of the entrance block has one original transomed light with a two-centred head. The building has brick quoins, a low-pitched roof, and two octagonal brick shafts. The 20th-century rear extension complements the main building, although the front windows do not match, the original openings remain undisturbed. The property is included for its group value.
