Description

Orchard House is a house dating from the 15th or 16th century, with alterations made in the 18th century. It is timber framed, plastered, and has a roof made of handmade red clay tiles. The house originally had three bays and featured a long jetty facing northwest, which used to extend further southwest. An unjettied range of three bays extends to the northwest from the southwest bay, enclosing part of the jetty, and includes an 18th-century stack at the junction, facing southwest. There is a 20th-century lean-to porch in the rear angle and a 20th-century lean-to extension with a felt roof at the back of the northwest range.

The house has two storeys, and the southwest elevation, which faces Boose's Green, features a three-window range of 20th-century casements. There is a 20th-century half-glazed door set in a fluted and pedimented doorcase. An original plain bracket below the jetty is enclosed by the rear porch. Above this porch, there is one early 19th-century casement with four lights made of handmade glass. Both ranges of the house have jowled posts, heavy studding with curved braces trenched to the inside, shutter grooves for unglazed windows, plain joists of horizontal section, and crownpost roofs with axial bracing. The northwest range includes one originally open truss with unjowled posts and chamfered arched braces. The layout of the house is unusual, with the jetty of one range enclosed by another late medieval range, and it is unclear why this is the case; it is possible that one range was resited.
