Description

The Bell Public House is a building that originated as a house in the 16th century and has been altered in the 17th and 20th centuries. It features a timber frame that is plastered and has a roof made of handmade red clay tiles. The structure consists of two bays facing north and a three-bay crosswing at the right end, which includes an internal stack at the junction. There is a 17th-century rear extension to the crosswing with an end stack, along with a single-storey extension from the 20th century. The main range and crosswing are both two storeys tall, while the rear extension is one storey with attics.

The building has a two-window range of 20th-century casements and two half-glazed doors from the same period. The crosswing jetties at the front, supported by two plain brackets. It features jowled posts and heavy studding. Inside the main range, there are chamfered axial beams and chamfered joists with a horizontal section and step stops, as well as straight tension braces set within the studs and a crownpost roof with straight axial braces. The crosswing includes chamfered transverse beams with lamb's tongue stops, a clasped purlin roof, and blocked frieze windows at the front. The rear extension has a chamfered axial beam with lamb's tongue stops and plain joists with a vertical section. There are also two large wood-burning hearths present.
