Description

Kynaston Farmhouse is a house that dates back to the 16th century or earlier and has undergone significant alterations in the 20th century. It is timber framed, covered in roughcast render, and has a roof made of interlocking concrete tiles. The house has three bays facing northeast and features an axial stack. There is a 20th-century extension on the left end with an end stack, as well as a 20th-century conservatory at the rear. The building is two storeys high, with three 20th-century casement windows on the ground floor and two more on the first floor, one of which is located in a gabled half-dormer. The entrance has a 20th-century door and the roof is low-pitched.

Inside, a transverse beam runs through both the front and rear walls, which is mortised and tusk-tenoned on the outside. The right bay's interior displays exposed studding in the end wall, which is heavy and widely spaced, along with heavy longitudinal joists that are horizontally sectioned. The next bay contains an inserted beam that is chamfered with lamb's tongue stops, as well as chamfered joists that are vertically sectioned, all featuring lamb's tongue stops. The original wallplates are located just above the first-floor level. The walls were raised approximately 1.30 metres and the roof was rebuilt around 1954 after a thatch fire. Although little of the original structure is visible, the inserted floor dates to the 17th century, and the joists in the right bay suggest a late medieval origin, though this cannot be confirmed based on the evidence visible at the time of the survey. All internal tiebeams have been severed or removed.
