Description

Perry Childs Farmhouse is a house dating from the 17th century, with alterations made in the 19th century. It is timber framed, plastered, and has a roof made of handmade red clay tiles. The building consists of two parallel ranges aligned approximately east-west, each with two bays and facing east. Each range has an internal stack located in the front bay against the outside wall, while there is an external stack on the right return wall of the rear bay, which is enclosed by a single-storey lean-to extension. A 20th-century lean-to conservatory is present on the left return wall. The farmhouse is two storeys high with attics and features a four-window range of late 19th-century sashes grouped in pairs, along with one 19th-century casement window in each gable. The entrance has a 20th-century door set in a gabled porch. Inside, there are chamfered axial beams with lamb's tongue stops on each floor of both ranges, and the joists are plastered to the soffits. The structure includes re-used timber from a medieval house. The left ground floor hearth has two salt recesses with V heads and a chamfered mantel beam with lamb's tongue stops. In the attic, there is a door made of three plain rebated boards, dating from the 17th century or later, mounted on re-used medieval strap hinges with incised lines.
