Description

Chief's Farmhouse is a house dating from the 17th century, with alterations made in the 18th and 19th centuries. It features a timber frame that is plastered, with a facade of painted red brick laid in Flemish bond, and is roofed with handmade red clay tiles. The building has four bays facing south and includes an internal stack against the rear wall in the second bay from the left end. To the right, there is a single-storey extension with an end stack from the 19th century, and to the left, there is a single-storey lean-to extension from the 18th or 19th century. The house is two storeys tall with attics.

On the ground floor, there are three 20th-century sash windows and one early 19th-century sash window with nine lights. The first floor has four early 19th-century sash windows, also with nine lights. A 20th-century door is present. Inside, the farmhouse has jowled posts, primary straight bracing, axial beams with lamb's tongue stops, plain joists, and a clasped purlin roof. A large wood-burning hearth facing to the right includes an original salt recess and bread oven, though it has a modern replacement door. The 20th-century door is located in its original position, creating a lobby entrance with an original newel stair to the south of the stack, which ascends from the ground floor to the attics. The upper part of the stack, approximately from the attic floor level, has been rebuilt.
