Description

Petches Bridge Old Farmhouse is a house located on Fetches Bridge Road in Finchingfield, dating from the mid 16th century, with extensions added in the early 17th century and the 20th century. The building is timber framed, plastered, and features some exposed framing, with a roof made of handmade red clay tiles. The original structure consists of two bays aligned north-south, likely part of a larger hall house that has since been lost. There is a two-bay extension to the south from the early 17th century, which includes an internal stack at the junction against the east wall. The main entrance is on the east side, where a 20th-century single-storey extension is located at the front of the left end, along with a 20th-century semi-circular conservatory at the rear.

The farmhouse is two storeys high, with two 20th-century casement windows on the ground floor and three on the first floor. A 20th-century door leads into a tiled gabled porch. The right end of the roof is hipped. The right return wall displays exposed close studding, along with original sprockets at both the right and rear. The left return wall also has exposed studding, though some timber has been replaced. Inside, there are jowled posts, chamfered axial beams, and plain joists, with larger horizontal sections in the right bays and smaller square sections in the left end. The right end features exposed studding with curved tension braces set into the interior, a complete unglazed window with three diamond mullions, and a crownpost roof that originally had shallow axial braces, which have been replaced with modern timber. The left end has a clasped purlin roof.
