Description
House. Built around 1600, with extensions in the 20th century. It is a timber-framed building, with plaster walls and a roof of handmade red clay tiles. The original structure comprised two bays facing southeast, with an axial stack in the left bay forming a lobby entrance. A two-bay crosswing is located to the left. A single-storey lean-to extension is attached to the rear of the main range, and a large 20th-century extension is found to the left of the crosswing. The house has two storeys and an attic. The front has a three-window arrangement of mid-19th century sash windows with small, dividing panes of glass. A single 18th-century three-light window with a wrought iron casement and rectangular leaded panes is set into the gable of the attic. The front door is 20th century in style, but has an early 19th-century hood with scrolled brackets. Decorative plasterwork in a chevron pattern is visible on the exterior walls. The left return wall of the crosswing reveals the timber frame, including an original four-light window with ovolo mullions on the ground floor, and a similar blocked window above. A 17th-century three-light window with a wrought iron casement has been moved to the rear lean-to. Some artificial timber framing is visible at the rear of the building. Inside, the house features jowled posts, a roof with clasped purlins, and a large wood-burning hearth facing the main range. The mantel beam is inscribed with the initials M.B. and A.L. There are some later features, including repositioned timber framing and beams, and a 17th-century staircase with turned balusters, said to have come from Hempstead, added around 1950.
