Description

Downwater and an attached cottage date from the late 18th or early 19th century. They are built of colourwashed render over cob and stone, with a gabled thatched roof and mid-19th century brick end stacks. The building has a 4-unit plan. It is two stories high, with a 4-window front. Two early 20th-century gabled porches with slate roofs and 20th-century doors have been added. The windows are mostly early 20th-century two-light casements with flat rendered arches, though two late 19th-century two-light casements with glazing bars are present on the first floor of the left-hand side. Rendered, two-story extensions with Welsh slate roofs flank the original building. Inside, the left-hand cottage features scribed joists, an open fireplace, and A-frame trusses with pegged collars. The interior of Downwater Cottage was not inspected but is thought likely to be of interest.
