Description

This is a farmhouse, originally dating to the early 18th century, that has been extended and altered to create two separate dwellings, Holly Cottage and Lavender Cottage.

The early part of the building is constructed of slatestone rubble, while the eastern extension appears to be rendered cob. The roof is thatched, and brick chimneystacks are visible.

The building is arranged as a linear range of three sections. Holly Cottage occupies the westernmost section, representing the original farmhouse. Lavender Cottage occupies the remainder, encompassing the eastern cell of the original farmhouse, the eastern extension, and a northern outshut.

Facing south onto the former farmyard, the two phases of construction are apparent in the building line, which steps back to indicate the extension. The left side has two wide bays with a doorway set beneath a lean-to porch. The right side has two irregular bays and a similar doorway and porch. Windows are 20th-century casements in original openings. The thatched roof has a chimneystack at each end and one in the centre of the original farmhouse.

The north elevation displays several irregular window openings to the right and a two-storey outshut to the left. The west gable end has a single ground-floor window, while the east gable end is adjacent to the Round House.

Inside Lavender Cottage, there are two staircases, a feature reflecting the former use of the eastern extension as a separate dwelling. On the ground floor, the westernmost room contains a wide stone fireplace; alcoves on either side suggest the original locations of a winder staircase and a doorway leading into Holly Cottage. The easternmost room retains a complete floor frame with a deep chamfered cross beam and joists. The wide stone fireplace, heavily repointed, includes a bread oven and a deep timber lintel marked with taper marks. Within the living room, a timber door case has been inserted from an earlier structure. Holly Cottage retains a gable fireplace with a chamfered timber lintel. The roof above Holly Cottage has been rebuilt, while the roof above Lavender Cottage remains, with some reinforcing and replacement timbers.
