Description

A row of four early 19th-century houses, including a former ropewalk, stands on the north side of East Street, Newton Abbot. The buildings are rendered with a continuous slate roof and party wall stacks. They have double-depth plans. The front elevation has an overall 7-window range with a 1:3:3 window arrangement. To the left is a 20th-century garage entrance with a wide flat arch. A plaque above the entrance reads "EAST STREET ROOM," and the lintel is painted with "The Rope Walk." A late 19th-century 3/3-pane sash window sits above the arch, and a smaller 3-pane window is above that, likely from the 20th century. The left gable end has moulded coping. Numbers 117 and 119 form a symmetrical pair with 6/6-pane sash windows. They have a central paired set of 20th-century doors with narrow overlights, flanked by similar windows on each floor. Numbers 121 and 123 are also a symmetrical pair with 20th-century doors leading to a central passageway that connects to a rear courtyard including other houses (not of special architectural interest). Number 121 has half-glazed French windows to the front. The interior was not inspected. The ropewalk was extended 140 yards in 1828 by Samuel Yeo, whose son later built a chapel in East Street.
