Description

A row of four houses, dating to the 17th century, with a refronting around 1800. The houses are now used as shops, accommodation, and an office. They are built of brick, with some areas painted, and have some internal timber framing. The roof is tiled, with slate sections, a brick end stack, and a stack along the ridge. The buildings are two storeys high, with a five-window front. A top modillioned brick cornice runs along the top. Number 37 has exposed timber framing visible in the carriage entrance to Number 36, and a 20th-century shop front. Above the shop front is a canted oriel window with a consoled cornice, containing 2:4:2-pane horned sashes. Numbers 38 and 39 form a three-window range. To the right end is an entrance with a four-panel door and a two-storey canted bay window to the left. The ground floor has casements, and the first floor has 2:4:2-pane sashes. To the left is a round-headed entrance with a 20th-century split door, a canted bay window to the left, and a window with a sill and rusticated wedge lintel over a 16-pane sash to the right. Similar 16-pane sash windows are on the first floor. Number 40 has a 20th-century shop front with a canopy over a bay window. Above the shop front is a canted bay window with lean-to roof over 2:4:2-pane horned sashes, and a slate roof. The rear of the building includes a 20th-century gabled wing attached to Number 38. Internally, there are exposed chamfered beams. Number 39 has exposed close-studded cross walls with tension braces and without infill, a close-studded former rear wall, and flat joists. There are also two console brackets to a reinforcing steel beam.
