Description

43 Henley Street is a former inn, known as the Coach and Horses Inn and later the Duke of Wellington Inn, now functioning as a coffee shop. The building dates from the early 19th century but has earlier origins and was refaced in 1840. It is constructed of brick with buff headers and has stucco dressings. The front roof is covered with slate, while the rear has a steeper tile roof, featuring brick end stacks. The building is designed in a Georgian style and stands three storeys high with a symmetrical two-window range. It has plain eaves and the entrance is framed with moulded detailing, flanked by sidelights and a half-glazed door with small-paned glazing. A pentice with a deep fascia extends over the canted bay windows, which have 20th-century casements. The upper floor windows feature sills and rusticated wedge lintels with keys, with 16-pane sashes on the first floor and 4/8-pane sashes on the second floor. The rear of the building includes three gabled wings, one of which has a timber-framed gable, while the other two are from the 20th century. Historical records indicate that a building existed on this site in 1618, and the timbers at the back may be remnants from that earlier structure.
