Description
This is a range of three houses known as The Rookery, built in the early and mid-18th century, with later alterations. The houses are timber-framed with plastered and colourwashed walls resting on a tarred brick plinth. The roofs are covered in a mix of black-glazed and plain tiles.
The front elevation has a seven-window arrangement. Number 1 has a four-panelled door to the right, which is part of the architectural design of the adjacent Willow House (number 50 Castle Street). The door has a simple surround with a hood. Numbers 2 and 3 have late 19th-century half-glazed doors within timber surrounds, also with hoods. Cellar openings are visible at number 1. A square-headed carriageway provides rear access between numbers 2 and 3. The ground floor windows are mostly 8/8 unhorned sashes, with one 6/6 unhorned sash. The first floor windows consist of two 6/6 unhorned sashes at number 1, two 8/8 unhorned sashes at number 2, and two 3/6 horned sashes at number 3. The roof is hipped, with a ridge stack.
An early 18th-century two-storey wing projects westwards from the south end of the main range. This wing has a three-window range with late 20th-century casement windows and a stack set on the wall plane. At the rear, numbers 1 and 2 have two-storey outshuts fitted with 20th-century casement windows. The interiors have not been inspected, but are likely to be of architectural interest.
