Description
A row of four late 18th-century houses, now used as two separate dwellings, stands on the south side of Market Place in Melbourne. The buildings are constructed of red brick with coursed stone to the ground floor of number 18. They have tile roofs with a brick gable stack at the east end and a brick ridge stack at the west end, along with dentilled eaves bands. Each house extends over three storeys.
Number 18, on the west, features a panelled front door and a small-paned two-light horizontal sliding sash window to its west. A slightly higher three-light horizontal sliding sash is located beside this, with a matching two-light window in what was formerly the doorcase. Above these are two three-light small-paned horizontal sliding sashes, the one on the west being raised, and above that, two similar sashes on the same level.
Number 17, on the east, has a 20th-century glazed door and one two-light and one three-light small-paned horizontal sliding sash window. The upper floors mirror the arrangement below; two similar windows are found on the second floor and two more on the third. Attached to the east side is a lower two-storey section with a segmental brick archway on the ground floor providing access through the building and a three-light small-paned horizontal sliding sash window above. The ground and first-floor openings have segmental heads, while those on the second floor have flat heads.
