Description

Nos. 1 and 2 Ivy Cottages are a pair of estate cottages dating from around the mid-19th century, with some alterations made in the 20th century. They are constructed of red sandstone and feature a thatched roof with gabled ends. The building has an approximately U-shaped plan, consisting of a central block with crosswings that extend further to the front than to the rear, which faces the road. Although the cottages appear to be a single structure, the slightly shorter front right wing is likely a later addition and was originally a workshop, as indicated by a blocked arch in its rear wall.

The cottages are two storeys high and have a mostly symmetrical front. The gabled ends of the crosswings are on the left and right, with two windows in the center. There is a 20th-century front door accessed through a 20th-century lean-to porch on the left, and a second front door through a slated lean-to on the right. The eaves of the thatched roof are gabled over two dormers that feature curly bargeboards in the center. The ends of the wings have casement windows, all fitted with late 20th-century plastic casements that have small panes.

The rear elevation, which faces the road, is slightly recessed in the center between the wings, which both have pierced curly bargeboards on their gables. There is a gabled dormer in the center, and the small pane plastic casements have concrete architraves, with some openings likely dating from the 20th century. There is a blocked doorway on the right-hand wing and a blocked archway on the left-hand wing. The interior has not been inspected.
