Description

Forest Gate is a lodge associated with Mamhead House, which was rebuilt by the architect Salvin between 1828 and 1833 for Sir R. W. Newman Bart. The building has undergone significant alterations in the late 20th century. It is constructed of red sandstone and features a thatched roof with a stack that has paired stone shafts. The plan is approximately rectangular with a rounded wing on the east side that overlooks the road and includes a verandah. There is a castellated single-storey addition at the south-east corner, likely from the late 20th century.

The exterior is single-storey with an attic. The east elevation has a rounded end where the thatch extends over the verandah, supported by posts, and features 4-light windows with pointed arched leaded panes, along with an attic dormer in thatch. The front door, which is a 19th-century plank door with a cover strip, is located on the right return, where there is also an enlarged late 20th-century 4-light window and two attic dormers in thatch with decorative curly bargeboards, pendants, and late 20th-century casements. The rear (west) elevation is gabled and has pierced curly bargeboards, along with 1-light late 20th-century windows set in original chamfered stone frames. A flight of rounded steps leads up to a late 20th-century door in the outshut on the south side, which also has two 3-light casements. The interior has been modernized.
