5/285 Hermit's Cave in quarry face - immediately south west of Spring Lodge GV II

Hermit's Cave. Probably mid/late C18. Red sandstone. Gothick. A neatly-quarried cave in the sheer face of a red sandstone quarry with a 2-centred arched doorway and a small 2-centred arched window on the left return. The interior has a slightly curved stone roof and a stone bench with a pillow cut out of the rock. Above the bench a cross is incised on the wall and the possibly punning initials I. BIDGOOD are carefully cut on the inner return wall.
