Description
This statue, located at the entrance to Nine Year Aud Hole on the north side of Cave Drive, is approximately 250 metres south-west of Brizlee Tower. It is a life-size figure of a hermit, likely dating from the late 18th century. The statue is made of cut sandstone and depicts a robed, bearded man standing next to the entrance of a natural cave that has formed due to the slipping of the sandstone cliff face. Similar statues can be found in the ruins of Hulne Friary, which are part of the landscape improvements made around 1770-1780 by Lancelot Brown.
