Description

The Iron Bridge over the River Aln, dated 1812, was made by I. & T. Cookson of Newcastle. It is constructed of cast iron with squared stone abutments. The bridge features three round arches, which have rings in the open spandrels and quatrefoil-plan piers that rise from stone footings. Above the arches, the main girder displays a Percy lion at the center and at both ends, with crowned crescents above the piers. The bridge is adorned with an ornamental openwork embattled parapet that includes trefoil-headed panels and cusped lozenges above the piers. At each end, there are quatrefoil-plan standards with maker's plates on the inner faces, along with similar outer standards at the ends of the abutment parapet. This bridge is noted for its good quality and is considered a relatively early example of iron bridge construction.
