Description

Hulne Friary features a curtain wall with gateways and other structures, likely dating from the 15th century, with the east and south-west gates added in the late 18th century. The wall is constructed of squared stone, except for the gatehouse, which is made of large irregular blocks and rubble. The wall is approximately 4 metres high and has bases for bartizans at the north-west and south-east corners. There are occasional remnants of a chamfered-out parapet. On the external face south of the east gate, there is a slab with a raised shield and a lion rampant.

The gatehouse is a two-storey square tower featuring an elliptical arch and a barrel-vaulted passage, with a stair-turret on the east side and chamfered loops. The east gate has studded double doors set in a moulded 3-centred arch beneath a gable topped with a cross finial. This gate is flanked by stepped buttresses that support panelled Gothick pinnacles, and there is a carved statue of a friar inside the gate. The south-west gateway has a pointed arch with a three-light window above and a gable, also flanked by stepped buttresses. There are blocked medieval doorways on the north and west sides.

Inside the curtain wall, there are remains of attached outbuildings to the south and west, including the ruins of a brewhouse located to the west of a 20th-century cottage on the south. There are also remains of a barn and byre to the west, with the gable end to the north being a reconstruction from the 18th century.

This site represents a well-preserved fortified perimeter of a Borders monastery.
