Description
Hulne Friary Infirmary is a mid-13th century building that was originally part of a Carmelite friary and is now a private house. It has been altered in the late 18th century. The structure is made of rubble with cut quoins and dressings, featuring a flat leaded roof over the infirmary hall and stone slates on the chapel. The infirmary is a detached block located within the curtain wall, south of the claustral buildings, and consists of an infirmary hall and a narrower chapel that resembles a chancel on the east side.
The west side has a blocked window with three lancet lights set under a pointed arch, topped with a coped gable and an 18th-century finial. There are 18th-century Gothick four-centred doorways on the north and south sides, with the southern doorway featuring a quatrefoil above it, flanked by contemporary two-light windows with small-paned sashes. An east gable stack has a crenellated cap. The chapel has similar two-light windows in its side walls and a roof pent against the end of the hall, while the east gable remains intact with an original east window featuring two lights and a quatrefoil in the spandrel.
This building is a unique survival of a Carmelite infirmary, following the typical medieval hospital plan, similar to St. Anne's Hospital in Ripon and likely St. Leonard's Hospital near Alnwick. There is a 20th-century timber addition on the south side that connects the infirmary with a cottage against the southern curtain, but this addition is not of special interest.
