Description

Helwell Farmhouse is likely dated to the late 18th or early 19th century, with a possible earlier service wing. The main block is whitewashed and rendered with a slate roof, hipped at the ends and concealed behind parapets. The rear wing also has a slate roof, with a hipped end. Chimneys are located at the ends of the main block. The house has a double-depth plan with two rooms wide, incorporating a central stair hall. The main entrance is located on the left return or within the rear left wing, with no direct front entrance. A recessed area in the centre of the rear elevation features steps leading down to a cellar.

The symmetrical front elevation has four bays, featuring French windows on the ground floor with glazing bars; the two left-hand windows have canted heads. Above, there are four 16-pane sash windows from the early 19th century. The left return has a 19th-century panelled door with a rectangular fanlight containing diamond glazing bars. There are also two first-floor and one ground-floor sash windows, each with 16 panes. The rear elevation of the main block has a 19th-century French window, two 19th-century sash windows with glazing bars, and one 20th-century window. Three attic dormers are present. This rear elevation is recessed in the centre, leading to steps down to the cellar. A single-story brick addition is located in the angle between the main block and wing.

Inside the rear wing is a small, slightly chamfered cross beam. The main range showcases early 19th-century joinery, including shutters and a stick baluster staircase with a wreathed handrail.
