Description
Lysons Cottage is a house that likely originated in the late 17th century and was extended in the 18th century. It is constructed of whitewashed plastered cob and stone rubble, topped with a thatched roof that is half-hipped at the ends of the main block and gabled at the end of the wing. The building features a left end stack to the main block, an axial stack to the rear wing, and an end stack to the wing. The plan is L-shaped, with the main block being single depth and two rooms wide, including a central passage, while the rear wing consists of two rooms, with the rear room likely dating to the late 17th century.
The exterior is two storeys high, with a symmetrical front that has two windows and a central front door, along with 20th-century metal frame casement windows. The left side of the building, which faces the road, has timber casement windows with glazing bars. A section of thatch visible in the wall indicates that the roof has been raised at some point.
The interior of the rear wing was inspected, revealing a 17th-century fireplace in the end stack, which features a step stopped chamfered lintel and a roughly chamfered crossbeam. At the time of the survey in 1987, the cottage was undergoing repairs, showcasing its character as an attractive traditional roadside dwelling.
