Description
Stonesettle is a house dating from around the mid 17th century, which was significantly enlarged in the 18th century. It features plastered stone rubble walls and a thatch roof, hipped at the front wing and gabled at the rear range. The building has a rendered rubble axial stack with a brick shaft, along with two rendered brick stacks, one lateral and one at the gable end.
The house has an L-shaped plan. The original section is positioned at right angles to the road and consists of a large room with a fireplace on its rear end wall and newel stairs in a projection beside it. In the 18th century, a cross wing was added at the rear of the house, which is double depth on the left side and two rooms wide, with each end room heated.
The exterior has two storeys and the L-shaped front faces the road. The wing projecting towards the road features a large late 20th-century three-light casement window on the first floor of the end wall, with a smaller light below and a 20th-century plank door to the right. There is a late 20th-century lean-to built in the angle of the two wings. The rear wing, which faces away from the road, has late 20th-century PVC windows. An early 20th-century stone porch with a plank door is located on its gable end.
The interior has been considerably altered in the 20th century, with the stone newel stairs being the only visible surviving feature from the 17th century, although an early fireplace may have been covered up.
