Description
The barn west of Molescombe House is a structure likely dating from the late 17th century or 18th century, which was remodeled in the 19th century. It is built of slate rubble and features an asbestos slate roof with half-hipped and gabled ends. The barn has a long plan with a cart entrance located to the right of the center at the front and a small blocked opening at the rear. During the 19th century, the barn was reduced in height and reroofed, with the new roof extending down at the front to create a cattle shelter facing the farmyard. At the front of the left-hand end, there is a 19th-century barn that adjoins at right angles.
The exterior showcases a main roof that extends over the open-fronted cattle shelter, supported by large rectangular slate rubble piers, with the bay to the right of center being wider and gabled in front of the cart entrance to the barn behind. The barn wall contains various small openings, including ventilation slits that were cut short by the 19th-century roof. Inside, the walls are plastered, and there are truncated ventilation slits. The barn features a 14-bay 19th-century scissor-braced softwood roof structure.
