Description

Chiverstone Farmhouse is a farmhouse that dates from around 1830 and is part of the Powderham Estate. It is constructed of whitewashed rendered stone and has a slate roof, which features a two-span design at the rear and hipped ends, with two stacks at each end, the front right stack projecting. The building has a large rectangular main block that is double depth and two rooms wide, with a central entrance leading into a through passage that contains the stair. There are two principal rooms at the front and a kitchen located at the rear right, which includes a service stair. A wing projects from the right end, containing service rooms on the ground floor and accommodation above.

The exterior of the farmhouse is two storeys high and features a symmetrical three-bay front with a 19th-century panelled front door, complemented by an attractive 19th-century lattice porch with pierced Gothic spandrels. The windows are 19th-century two-light casements, with three panes per light. The right wing, which is set back, has a 19th-century two-light ground floor casement beneath a 20th-century balcony with French windows. The rear elevation also includes a lattice porch at the rear door and 19th-century casements, while the left return has one first-floor 18th-century window, likely re-sited.

Inside, the farmhouse retains several 19th-century features, including floor tiling in the passage, two chimney-pieces (one made of marble and the other with reeded timber jambs), and joinery that includes panelled shutters and a china cupboard in the ground floor room on the left. This substantial early 19th-century farmhouse has group value with the Old House nearby.
