Description

Mellands is a villa built in the early 19th century, with an earlier service wing that likely dates from the 18th century. The building features rendered stone rubble and brick, while the service wing includes some stud construction. It has a two-span hipped slate roof with very deep eaves supported by eaves brackets, and there are two lateral stacks at the front and one dismantled stack at the rear of the main block.

The villa has a double depth main block that is rectangular in shape, with the main entrance located on the east side leading into a passage. An adjoining single depth range to the north is older and appears on 18th-century estate maps. There are also single-storey outbuildings at the rear of this wing, creating a small courtyard to the north of the main block.

The exterior is two storeys high with an asymmetrical front featuring a 2:3 window arrangement, including three windows in the service wing on the right. The main block has a central panelled front door with a rectangular fanlight that includes glazing bars. Above the door is a two-leaf window leading to a small balcony, supported by moulded brackets and adorned with an ornamental cast iron balustrade. To the right, there is a 12-pane 19th-century sash window with simple iron railing above the sill. The service wing has 19th-century small pane timber casements and a plank and cover strip door.

The symmetrical south elevation, which faces the garden, consists of three bays with 16-pane 19th-century sashes on the left and right, and a 12-pane sash in the centre, all featuring sun hoods supported by ornamental timber trellis brackets. The first floor has 4-pane sashes with louvred sun shutters. On the west elevation, there is a 19th-century French window with margin glazing and a similar sun hood on brackets, alongside a two-light 19th-century small pane casement to the left, and two first-floor 3 over 6 pane sash windows with simple iron railings above the sill.

The interior has not been thoroughly inspected but includes original joinery and a stick baluster stair. It is noted that the roof may have been added after the early 19th-century construction, as earlier, shorter eaves brackets were discovered behind the current ones during renovations. Overall, Mellands is a handsome early 19th-century house with unusual and attractive external details.
