Description
Red Lodge is a house that was formerly a lodge to Powderham Castle, located at the entrance of what used to be a private drive. It was built in 1830, with a later addition added to the rear in the late 20th century. The building features colourwashed plastered red sandstone and has an ornamental tiled roof with gables at both ends, complete with coped gables and kneelers. There are two rear lateral stone stacks with brick shafts, and the overall style is Tudor.
The layout consists of a single depth main block with a central entrance leading to a staircase, with heated rooms on either side. There is a rear center wing that has a two-span roof. Originally, the lodge was divided into two separate dwellings, each having one heated room, half of the rear wing, and sharing the front porch. The late 20th-century addition is a single-storey structure with a flat roof.
The exterior of the lodge is two stories high and has a symmetrical three-bay front. In the center, there is a two-storey porch featuring a coped gable with kneelers and a chamfered Tudor arched stone doorway, which contains a modern inner door. Above the door, there is a stone shield carved with the Courtenay torteaux. The first floor of the porch has a three-light mullioned oriel window supported by brackets, while the left and right sides have two-light mullioned windows. All windows on the front elevation are adorned with decorative leaded panes. The sides of the building have canted bay windows on the ground floor and two-light mullioned windows on the first floor, featuring square leaded panes, with similar mullioned windows on the rear wing.
Inside, the lodge has been modernized, but the original staircase remains intact, and the partition that divided the building into two has been removed. This substantial lodge boasts attractive exterior details and is prominently situated at the junction of the main road to Kenton and the road to Powderham.
