Description
The Round House is a house that is said to have been converted from the remains of the dovecote at Powderham Castle. It dates from the 18th century, with a likely addition from the 19th century. The original dovecote is built of Flemish bond brick and has a conical slate roof that has been painted with bitumen. The addition is whitewashed and rendered, and there is a brick chimney stack on the dovecote. The original dovecote is round in shape and was described in 1799 by Swete as a dove-house "with a cupola." The building has a one-room plan addition. The exterior features two ground floor and one first floor two-light casement windows on the dovecote, and there are two doors leading into the added block, which has 20th-century windows. The interior is plain. This structure is an unusual survival and is important for its landscape value, making it a striking feature in the Powderham landscape.
