Description
Sampsons Cottage is a farm cottage that served Sampsons Farm, although the farmhouse no longer exists. It likely dates from the late 18th century. The cottage is constructed from colourwashed rendered cob and stone rubble, topped with a thatched roof that has gabled ends. It features end stacks with brick shafts, with the right end stack projecting. The plan consists of a single depth, two-room layout with an approximately central entrance leading into the left-hand room, which has a stair against the rear wall that includes a winder and a straight flight. There is a single-storey 20th-century outshut and a 20th-century lean-to at the left end.
The exterior is two storeys high and has a symmetrical three-bay front, featuring a central 19th-century panelled front door set within a gabled brick porch with a slate roof. The windows are 19th-century casements with two lights, each containing eight panes, and there is a similar casement on the right return. The interior is plain, with the right-hand fireplace showcasing an exposed timber lintel, and the original stair remains intact. This attractive small cottage has not been significantly enlarged.
